Laughing Liberally @JimmysNo43
Had a great Friday night in the East Village at the Laughing Liberally comedy lab show. I so needed the laughter. I re-tweeted performer Abbi Crutchfield's tweet:
I am grateful to @NicoleSandler of RadioOrNow.com for introducing me (via her great show and podcast) to John Fugelsang and Julianna Forlano.

Library Lion Fortitude says: Read!
Love the Lions at the Fifth Avenue Main Library (Stephen A. Schwarzman Building). Besides the regal Fortitude, this photo shows how lovely the building looks following the restoration. (FYI, the southern lion is Patience.)

Unforgettable - Exclusive Preview
This video features my neighborhood in Sunnyside, Queens, NYC. The non-sister's body is found in a Sunnyside Gardens' walkthrough/alley and Bella's Pizzeria on 35th Street is really a pizzeria/coffee shop on Skillman between 46 and 47th. Marc Leavitt and Betsy Crawford's house/fence is by the crime scene. Enjoy. Our reward for losing parking for a few days.... And let's hope the show is as good as this preview.

Tax Day Protest, 2011
Tax Day Protest, 2011, a set on Flickr.
USuncut NYC was one of a number of groups at the steps of Farley Post Office (the historic main post office in NYC) greeting tax payers, reminding them they pay more taxes so Bank of America and other corporations like Exxon Mobil and GE can pay NONE. Here's a set of photos plus there is a short chanting video on YouTube.

NYC Planned Parenthood Support Rally
Cecile Richards, the head of Planned Parenthood, addressed the crowd gathered at Foley Square in NYC on Feb. 26, 2011, in support of PPFA and its funding. For many, Planned Parenthood provides their only access to healthcare. Planned Parenthood positively benefits so many lives. Its funding is essential.
NYC for Women's Repro Rights
Thousands gathered in Foley Square on Sat., Feb. 26, 2011, for a Rally for Women's Health in support of Planned Parenthood. Speakers included Cecile Richards, Senator Chuck Schumer, Congressmembers Jerry Nadler, Anthony Weiner, Carolyn Maloney, Elliot Engel, and Yvette Clarke, actor Kathleen Turner, the Rev. Dr. Donna Schaper of Judson Church, blogger Amanda Marcotte [who asked folks to tweet their stories with #thanksPPFA], and various activists from NARAL and NOW, and PPFA. Nellie McKay, John Darnielle, and Kathleen Hanna performed and/or spoke. More Photos, Info and Video at Brooklyn Vegan.

Marching in NYC for a Free Egypt
Beautiful energy, spirit, and hope in this mass of people marching together for a Free Egypt over 42nd Street by Bryant Park and the NY Library (right)-- NYC March with the People of Egypt, Time Square to the Egyptian mission at 44th and Second Ave; Feb 4, 2011. Joining them after work was a small effort compared to theirs. Bless them in their effort to stay non-violent in the face of an abusive government. A little personal note
Usually Friday is movie night but an overdue un-renewable book took me to the New York Public Library where there was great energy to feed my spirit after a hectic work week Yes, I found a good book to add to my pile at home, but I had a meaningful encounter at the checkout desk when Alex gave me friendly personal assistance you just don't get from the auto-check out. He noted that there were two more books to be picked up -- I had forgotten to check the reserve room AND when I couldn't find one of 'em, he found it amidst the new arrivals. But he was just was so darn pleasant.
Then I ran across the street to HSBC and while withdrawing some money from the ATM related to another human being there fixing one of the machines: Willie from Diebold. Those machines cost $45,000! No wonder there are bank transaction fees. But they don't have to pay them benefits and at least repairing them gives Willie a job and reason to smile.
Alex and Willie, two special New Yorkers -- thanks for touching my life.

"My" GUACAMOLE*
1 Ripe Avocado
2 teaspoons Chopped onions
½ teaspoon + Minced fresh garlic
1 teaspoon +/- chopped jalapeno (pickled slices fine)
¼ cup (skant) chopped fresh cilantro
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
Mash these together (vary amounts according to taste). Then stir in about ½ cup chopped fresh tasty tomato (winter suggestion: Holland or Israeli or those sold on the vine). Best to make just before use though will hold for several hours.
*This recipe is based on that made at the much missed Casa Mexico on Hudson Street, New York City, back in the early 90s. My brother David and I would go there for their great guac and their terrific garlic soup. The guac was made table-side and I asked them questions as to what they were using and caught the hang of it. At the request of a work colleague I created this more standard measurement version but I have never tasted a guacamole any better. Enjoy!

Hightower Lowdown Highlights
Just heard a couple of great quick podcasts (2 minutes) from Jim Hightower. You can can read and/or hear them on line. The first is THE PRICE OF AUTOCRATIC ARROGANCE on the outrageous cost that Mayor Bloomberg allowed to be expended through the prosecution/persecution of 52 peaceful protestors during the last Republican Conventiion. The second is about more job outsourcing, including Waterford IRISH crystal now being made in Eastern Europe (Will those pieces be labeled as tainted or fake? The CEO plans to keep the prices the same on the 20% of the pieces made there. I'm warning my Aunt Betty Murphy and her chief buyer, my cousin Pat, as to this corporate fraud: East European "Irish" crystal.) Listen to: CUT-RATE LABOR FOR ANY JOB.
And while at Jim's site, consider subscribing to his snailmail Hightower Lowdown.
