Who doesn't want to keep a few snowy memories accessible? Here's snow stuff from Queens, New York City, NY as well as some Ohio photos, complete with a tree-view from a condo window. Instead we have an executive branch in Washington DC that is trying to roll back what environmental protection / laws we have. I have been dabbling in genealogy a little more seriously for the last couple of years and am listening to and enjoying #RootsTech's livestream since I am #NotAtRootsTech. Over the last several years I have been listening to @Ancestry's Crista Cowan and a number of good genealogy podcasts and YouTube casts. Time to share some of the info (though I have heard that Blogger may be on its way out). Time to get back to blogging on a number of topics, actually. Watch this [blog] space. Peaceful assembly is a right in the Constitution. New Yorkers also know that Trump is a con man -- he has a history of it and lost decisively in New York, and he's a former Queen's street boy. We don't see him keeping his populist promises (which he borrowed from Bernie who had huge crowds that went unreported in mainstream corporate media). It is not in Trump's character. He's already reneged on his wall promise -- it is now a strong 2-layered fence at certain places (like Hillary suggested). I think it is early to be out in the streets but I will be there, peacefully and loudly, when he attacks women's rights, the social safety net, the environment, etc., and doesn't deliver on jobs and stopping bad trade deals. The folks out there are being pro-active and should not be condemned for peaceful assembly. Violence is another matter.

I miss and am still mourning actor Alan Rickman who died this past January. This is a favorite moment, a song from the movie Truly Madly Deeply, which seems apropos, missing Alan, here performing with Juliet Stevenson. "The sun ain't gonna shine anymore" but there IS some sunshine on YouTube.
He had lost his beautiful voice to throat cancer in 2002 after a remarkable singing career, including a stint with The Dubliners. He lives on in such music. Thanks, Jim, for sharing your gift with the world!
After moving further east in Queens, with Christmas on the horizon, it was high time to retrieve my Christmas tree from my Jewish former neighbors' attic. My friend Dorothy offered to help and before she drove me and my tree to the new neighborhood we stopped at the Dog and Duck pub for a beer and Friday night supper. There were Sunnyside Kiwanis president Will Sadd and secretary Carol Masiello! Their fundraising mixer was tonight though their email announcing it was not yet read (by me anyway). So dinner became a bit more expensive but it was fun AND I got to try the fried pickles special for half price. NYS Assemblymember Cathy Nolan stopped by and other nice folks too. The free mulled wine was sampled on the way out the door. It was a very festive evening! Tree and I are now safely in my "new" home and Little Christmas Eve is tomorrow! The holiday season has begun with tree, pickles, Kiwanis and friends!! Life is good!Kate Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01935923770699244573noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8187888375073054778.post-40212468501831444642015-09-12T22:04:00.000-04:002015-12-04T23:53:48.539-05:00Molasses CookiesAnother childhood recipe, this one is off the Brer Rabbit Molasses bottle, one my awesome mom made every so often. We would make these cookies small because then we could eat more of them. One time Mom and I were having one of our famous mother-daughter talks while drinking tea and eating cookies and looked down to find that we had eaten a couple of dozen!!! Call them molasses cookies or ginger cookies, just make these.

Mix together these ingredients:
3/4 Cup shortening (melted, cooled a bit) /
OR butter, softened
1 Cup sugar
1/4 Cup molasses
1 egg

Sift or whisk together in separate bowl:
2 t baking soda
2 Cups flour
1/2 t ground cloves
1/2 t ground ginger (or 1 t)
1 t cinnamon
1/2 t salt

Add dry ingredients to wet mixture, a bit at a time.

Chill for an hour or so (metal bowl helps).

Roll into small balls and roll balls in sugar.

Bake on greased cookie sheet at 375 degrees 8 to 10 minutes.

Leave on sheet a minute or so then remove to wire rack to cool.

Made with shortening, the cookies may harden to ginger snaps after a few days but the butter version stays pretty moist unless you bake them longer. Storing in cookie tins works well.

I made these to give to folks stopping at our Kiwanis table at the Richmond Hill Park Fair.
People want to vote FOR something, not against something. There is much more ENERGY in being POSITIVE. The Dems who ran on Democratic values like Senator Al Franken did just fine. Colorado's Senator Mark Udall stuck to one issue and people couldn't concentrate on the good things Democrats have stood for. In the meantime, Obama is once again considering the outrageous and not-really "GRAND BARGAIN" which will hurt "We the People" who have lost way too much ground already to add to the coffers of the 1%. ENOUGH. Let's build UP the 99%, the infrastructure, American jobs, the environment, life-giving things -- not life-destroying things!!!!Kate Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01935923770699244573noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8187888375073054778.post-85781932276099838892014-05-15T02:48:00.000-04:002014-05-15T02:48:16.359-04:00Venting re Republican (In)actionThom Hartmann has been venting this week on the deliberate and harmful Republican obstructionism in Congress and I reposted on Facebook a Jimmy Carter quote, "If you don't want your tax dollars to help the poor, then stop saying you want a country based on Christian values, because you don't." I followed up by venting in a reply comment and it needs more airing. So I re-vent here:

The Republican politicians have created havoc in Congress -- nothing is being done to help ordinary people or our environment. But the polls show only 49 percent of the people know they are in charge of the House and probably fewer know they are obstructing the Senate. The GOP expect the Dems will be blamed by voters for most of our country's problems and sadly they are probably correct. Meanwhile our citizens see their jobs shipped overseas while companies continue to get tax breaks for this. The Dems tried to reverse this and the GOPS stopped it. They are playing politics and people are starving and our environment is being decimated. Scary times. Not Christian and not ethical.
Kate Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01935923770699244573noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8187888375073054778.post-42972582287437943742014-04-19T08:01:00.001-04:002014-04-19T08:01:35.005-04:00Aereo.comThanks to Consumer Reports
magazine, I have discovered Aereo.com which provides me the missing arial for my aged TV whose converter box which had provided broadcast channels bit the dust. I mostly watch online but it is great to be able to catch an awards show or other special, plus it records and it plays on Roku, my computer AND my phone. There is a Utah case going to the Supreme Court because the other companies want to squelch competition. Nonsense. Broadcast TV on the public air waves is my right whatever device or company assists me. Good luck, AREO. Kate Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01935923770699244573noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8187888375073054778.post-26884234488894388692014-02-23T16:56:00.000-05:002014-02-23T16:56:54.973-05:00President Obama: Just say NO to Keystone XLI hope that President Barack Obama sees this tweet from @PoppaWillie, thinks about it hard and fast, THEN says NO to the Keystone XL Pipeline.
We will bleed more jobs and flush our trade deficit deeper down the toilet. WHY is Barack Obama supporting it?!!?? Call 202-456-1111 to complain -- and call your Congressmembers. As Ed Schultz of @WeGotEd said, "Not a single trade deal in the last 40 years has benefitted US workers."

Mix together these ingredients:
1 pound butter
1 Cup light brown sugar
4 Cups white flour

Roll into 4 rolls and roll them in red or green sugar (for Christmas).

Chill overnight.

Slice off cookies and bake at 350 degrees 15 to 20 minutes until golden.

Hey, use organic ingredients and you'll feel better about the pound of butter, but each cookie is small. FYI, my ex said don't use whole wheat flour. He tried it and "blech".Kate Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01935923770699244573noreply@blogger.com0
